Anytime you allow someone to come into your home to perform a service, you’re giving that person a certain degree of trust that they haven’t necessarily earned. It’s true that the vast majority of service professionals are exactly that – professionals. But then again, all it takes is one bad apple to spoil the bunch.
When you’re talking about having someone come in and clean your house while you’re at work or perform a little routine landscaping, that’s one thing. When you’re asking someone to come in and take care of an elderly relative, suddenly you’re talking about something else entirely.

Such was the case with one family in Halewood, who recently began to notice cash and other items missing from their 93-year-old mother’s bedroom. So many people were in and out of that house on a regular basis that they weren’t sure where to begin their search for exactly what was going on. Luckily, they installed a nanny camera to get to the root of the matter. What they found was horrifying, to say the least.

The Case of the Family Hairdresser: What Happened

As is common with most elderly people who choose to remain in their homes, the family of a 93-year-old woman began hiring certain professionals to come in and provide certain services throughout the week. One such professional was Barbara Parker, a 61-year-old hairdresser who came into the home a few times a month. However, the 93-year-old woman’s family quickly began to realize that something was not right.

After certain family members began to notice that small (and sometimes large) amounts of cash were mysteriously going missing, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They set up a secret “nanny cam” recording device in their elderly loved one’s bedroom to see once and for all what was going on.

It didn’t take long to reveal that Parker was the one who was taking the money. Footage recovered from the nanny camera revealed Parker first rummaging through the old woman’s belongings before locating a wad of cash. She first held the money in between her teeth while she continued her search (unsanitary, to say the least) and then hid the money in her bag.

Just a few moments later, she also takes a chocolate bar out of a box in her elderly client’s bedroom. She then proceeds to give her client a haircut as if nothing had happened. The most depressing part of all of this is that the elderly woman was in the bedroom the entire time, but she was absolutely oblivious as to what was going on.

The family, upon realizing what was going on, immediately went to the police, and Barbara Parker was charged with her crime. She admitted to everything in court – but only after the nanny camera footage was used as evidence.

It’s important to note that the nanny camera footage was also shared on the Internet, where it quickly became a viral video throughout the area. It was seen by more than three million (!) people in less than 48 hours.

Family friends said that the elderly woman was absolutely “shaken” by what had happened, but she also wanted to put it behind her. Her family indicated that their biggest priority now was to do whatever was necessary to help her feel safe and comfortable in her own home again, for however long she chooses to stay there.

Let this be a lesson to all of us: You truly never know who might be out to do you harm. However, at least we can turn to the wonders of modern technology to help protect us in these types of situations. Without taking the step to install that nanny camera, the elderly woman’s family may have never discovered the true culprit. With that camera, however, the thief was identified and appearing in court in a matter of months – definitely a somewhat happy ending to an unfortunate story.
