If you’ve ever spent time watching your favorite spy film or television show, saw the hero whip out an incredible device and thought “Man, I really want one of those for myself,” we’ve officially reached an era where accomplishing that particular goal might be easier than you thought it would be. There is a wide range of devices available right now that are absolutely something out of a cold war spy thriller that you can purchase for under $1,000 in most cases.

Spy Gadgets

The Seek Thermal Camera

Think, for a moment, about the classic 1980s film “Predator” in which Arnold Schwarzenegger and his team of commandos battle a deadly alien hunter in the jungles of South America. Periodically throughout the film, we see things from the alien’s point of view — and get a glimpse of his very particular vision that allows him to pick up heat signatures of those around him. Not only is this idea no longer science fiction, it’s also no longer something that is only available to military members or law enforcement officers. With the Seek Thermal Camera, you can view heat signatures of your own for just $459.

The Seek Thermal Camera offers not only a 300 lumen LED spotlight but also a full 20-degree field of view, a 206 by 156-pixel resolution display and it can accurately detect heat from up to 900 feet away. There’s even a smaller version, appropriately called the Seek Compact, that adds this technology to your existing smartphone for as little as $249.

The Net Gun

Guns that shoot nets are another staple of high octane Hollywood fare, particularly in action films where the good guys need to be able to take the bad guy alive — or vice versa. Again, you may think that you’ll only be able to enjoy something like this within the confines of your local cinema, but it’s another situation where modern technology has made you very, very wrong.

The Net Gun, as its name suggests, is an air-charged device known as a “capture tool” that uses a compressed air mechanism to launch a massive nylon net that is almost impossible to rip open with your bare hands. The net itself is 52 square feet and the gun has a range of 50 feet, meaning that so long as you don’t have anything blocking your view, you can take down just about anyone at a moment’s notice. While the Net Gun is a costly purchase — it comes in at about $847 — you get four nets to play with in any way that you see fit.

The Cell Phone Jammer

If you’ve ever been sitting in a movie theater and have been irritated by the person a few seats away who just can’t seem to stay off of his or her cell phone during the film, a Cell Jammer is absolutely for you. It’s a small, compact device that, when activated, will jam wireless signals from just about any source you can think of. With just a quick press of your button, all 2G, 3G, 4G and even GPS transmissions within your immediate area will go completely dark.

Now, it’s important to note that unless you are a law enforcement officer, it’s actually illegal to own a product like the Cell Phone Jammer in the United States. It’s equally illegal to do so throughout the European Union, too. But at the same time, if you’re the type of person who legitimately needs to be able to jam cell signals at a moment’s notice, there’s a chance that you might not care about that tricky little detail too much.

The Photonic Disruptor

Last but not least we have the Photonic Disruptor, which is about as close to owning your own personal laser beam that you’re ever going to get. This isn’t necessarily something that Goldfinger would use to torture information out of James Bond, but it’s also not that far off. Intended for use only by the military and police agencies, it’s a beam that you can shine directly into someone’s eyes to totally disrupt their vision WITHOUT causing permanent eye damage.
