According to most experts, while it’s true that babysitters are responsible for a relatively small number of the total crimes that are reported against children every year, the problem is still severe — and certainly worth a closer look. One study revealed that out of all the offenses that babysitters commit on a regular basis, sex crimes actually outnumber physical assaults at a rate of two to one. Likewise, young kids are the most at risk to either of these types of incidents — particularly those between the ages of one and three years old.

Nanny Camera

No parent wants to leave their child in the hands of a monster, but appearances can often be deceiving. Recently, one parent suspected that his child was being abused by his nanny and decided to take matters into his own hands. He installed a hidden camera in his home to see if he could get to the bottom of the matter. After reviewing the tape, his worst fears — and indeed, the worst fears of any parent — were confirmed.

The Case of the Lake Jackson Nanny

Christine Kaye Carroll is a former Lake Jackson nanny who also performed regularly as Mary Poppins, among other characters, with a local theater troupe. Recently, she was charged by the local police department with injury to a child and child endangerment after she was caught on video beating one of the kids she frequently babysat for.

The trouble began when the boy in question, a four-year-old, told his father that the nanny had been hitting him. The father then did what any caring parent would do: He installed a hidden camera in his home so that he could see things for himself.

When describing the videotape to a local news affiliate, a lieutenant from the police department said that the woman kept screaming at the boy and his siblings in an effort to get them to stay quiet while they ate. At one point in the recording, she literally said, “If you open your mouth one more time, I’m going to knock the fire from you.”

Then, everyone’s worst fears were confirmed. She walked around the table behind the boy and smacked him in the back of the head so hard that he actually fell forward against the surface of the table. Not only did this cause an abrasion to the back of his head, but it also led to a pretty serious cut on his face.

For the record, the video also shows that the boy was quietly eating when he was hit — the babysitter was upset about noise that simply wasn’t taking place.

According to official court documents, the sound that the boy makes when he gets struck in the head — and then hits his face against the table — are so loud that they can be heard clearly on the tape’s audio.

After reviewing the tape for himself, the boy’s father called the police and filed a formal report. That officer stated that the video shows Carroll continued to yell at the boy instead of making any effort to console him after he received a cut on his face during the injury.

As of right now, the babysitter is out on bond. Police say, however, that a grand jury is expected to hear the case in a formal capacity in the not too distant future.

Nanny Hidden Camera

In an effort to play a more active role in the community and to help prevent these types of issues from happening, the Lake Jackson Police Department has advised parents who are looking for childcare assistance with their children to rely on their own common sense first and foremost. Before you hire anyone to care for your child, consider hiring a professional background search company to investigate any candidates as thoroughly as possible. Word-of-mouth referrals are also important, as you’re getting real information from people who have first-hand experience with babysitters and other caregivers before you make any type of decision in your own right.
